Is there a history of trauma?
Background
Ankle and Foot Examination
The approach to the ankle and foot examination should be standardized and consistent across patients. We recommend following the “IP-PASS” mnemonic. This stands for Inspection, Palpation, Passive range of motion, Active range of motion, Strength and neurovascular examination, and Special tests. By standardizing the examination, a consistent examination approach is ensured, covering all important components and making charting easier. Patients with traumatic ankle and foot pain, especially those with obvious injuries, may require a modified version of the examination, though patients with atraumatic ankle and foot pain should be approached systematically.
